Prom season is here, and for high schoolers across West Michigan, it’s one of the most photographed nights of the year. Between parent photos at home, professional shots at the venue, and the constant stream of phone pictures with friends, your smile is going to be captured from every angle.
If your child has braces, a little planning ensures they look and feel their best for the big night.
Timing Your Appointments
The weeks leading up to prom require some strategic scheduling.
Two to three weeks before: This is the ideal time for a regular adjustment appointment. It allows any soreness to resolve completely before prom night, and teeth will look their best with fresh wires and clean brackets.
One week before: Avoid scheduling adjustments this close to prom. New wires often cause a few days of tenderness, and you don’t want your child uncomfortable during the event.
Day of prom: Not the time for any orthodontic work unless there’s an actual emergency.
If your child has an adjustment already scheduled during the week before prom, call our Grandville or Holland office to discuss rescheduling.
Getting Photo-Ready
A few simple steps make braces look their best in photos:
Clean brackets thoroughly: Brush and floss carefully the day of prom. Food particles and plaque on brackets show up in photos, especially flash photography. A quick brush right before leaving for pictures helps.
Choose rubber band colors wisely: If your child wears colored bands, consider switching to clear or silver for prom. These photograph more subtly than bright colors. Alternatively, some students choose bands that coordinate with their dress or suit.
Lip care matters: Dry, chapped lips draw attention away from the smile. Use lip balm in the days leading up to prom, and apply a subtle lip product before photos.
Practice your smile: It sounds silly, but practicing in the mirror helps. A natural, relaxed smile photographs better than a forced grin. Slight parting of lips often looks better than a tight-lipped smile trying to hide braces.
The Prom Night Emergency Kit
Even with perfect preparation, things can go wrong. Pack a small emergency kit for the evening:
- Orthodontic wax for any irritation from brackets or wires
- Small mirror for checking teeth after eating
- Travel toothbrush and mini toothpaste for freshening up
- Floss picks or interdental brushes for quick cleaning
- Pain reliever just in case
- Lip balm
Keep this in a small bag, clutch, or jacket pocket. It takes up almost no space and provides peace of mind.
Eating at Prom
Prom dinners and after-parties present food challenges. Being thoughtful about choices prevents bracket problems on what should be a worry-free night.
Generally safe options:
- Soft chicken or fish entrees
- Pasta dishes
- Soft bread rolls
- Cooked vegetables
- Cake and soft desserts
Approach with caution:
- Steak (cut into small pieces)
- Crusty bread
- Raw vegetables from appetizer platters
Avoid entirely:
- Hard candy from gift bags
- Caramel or sticky desserts
- Nuts
- Hard breadsticks or croutons
When in doubt, take small bites and chew carefully. This is not the night to bite into a whole apple for a photo op.
After Prom Care
Late nights mean tired teens who want to fall into bed without brushing. Don’t let it happen.
Even if prom runs until 2 AM and your child is exhausted, they need to brush before sleeping. All that eating, drinking, and talking with braces means significant buildup that shouldn’t sit on teeth overnight.
Keep supplies laid out and ready so the bedtime routine is as quick as possible.
Confidence Is the Best Accessory
Here’s the truth: braces photograph fine. Modern brackets are smaller and less obtrusive than they used to be. Most people in prom photos are looking at the overall picture—the dress, the smile, the friends—not examining brackets up close.
The most photogenic thing your child can wear to prom is confidence. A genuine smile always photographs better than self-consciousness, regardless of orthodontic hardware.
