As West Michigan transitions from winter to spring, families are cleaning out closets, organizing garages, and freshening up their homes. It’s the perfect time to apply that same energy to orthodontic care.
Over months of treatment, supplies get depleted, tools get worn out, and routines can become a bit sloppy. A spring refresh gets everything back on track.
Take Inventory of Your Supplies
Pull out all your orthodontic supplies and assess what you have:
Toothbrush:
- When did you last replace it? Toothbrushes should be swapped every three months, or sooner if bristles are frayed.
- Frayed bristles don’t clean effectively around brackets.
- With braces, toothbrushes often wear out faster than normal.
Interdental brushes:
- Are they worn down or bent?
- Do you have enough to last the next few months?
- These little brushes do a lot of work and need regular replacement.
Floss threaders or orthodontic flossers:
- Running low?
- Stock up so you’re never tempted to skip flossing because you’re out of supplies.
Orthodontic wax:
- Is your supply adequate?
- Wax gets used up and also gets old. Replace containers that have been sitting around for months.
Rubber bands:
- If you wear them, do you have enough?
- Are you using the correct size? (They should match what Dr. Porto prescribed.)
Make a list of what needs replacing and stock up.
Deep Clean Your Equipment
Retainer cases and aligner cases: Over time, these get grimy. Wash them with soap and water, or run them through the dishwasher if they’re dishwasher-safe. A clean case prevents bacterial growth.
Electric toothbrush heads: If you use an electric toothbrush, the head needs replacing every three months. While you’re at it, wipe down the handle with a disinfecting wipe.
Water flosser reservoir: If you use a water flosser, the reservoir can develop mold or mineral buildup. Clean it thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Audit Your Routine
Be honest with yourself about how well your daily routine is actually going:
Brushing:
- Are you really brushing after every meal, or has that slipped?
- Are you spending enough time (three to four minutes with braces)?
- Are you using proper angles to clean above and below brackets?
Flossing:
- How often are you actually flossing? Daily, or just when you remember?
- Is it thorough flossing, or a quick pass that doesn’t really clean between teeth?
Rubber bands:
- If you’re supposed to wear them, are you wearing them the prescribed hours?
- Have you been “forgetting” more often lately?
Spring is a good time to recommit to the habits that slipped during winter.
Refresh Your Technique
If it’s been a while since you really focused on proper brushing and flossing technique, ask for a refresher at your next appointment. The team at Enjoy Orthodontics can demonstrate proper angles, show you areas you might be missing, and recommend tools that might help.
Sometimes a small technique adjustment makes a big difference in cleaning effectiveness.
Organize Your Space
Wherever you keep your orthodontic supplies, make sure it’s organized and accessible:
- Group supplies together so everything is easy to find
- Throw away empty containers and old supplies
- Make sure travel kits are stocked and ready to grab
- Keep supplies visible as a reminder to use them
If your supplies are buried in a drawer or scattered across the bathroom, you’re less likely to maintain consistent habits.
Schedule a Mid-Year Checkup
If you haven’t been to the dentist for a regular cleaning and checkup recently, spring is a good time to schedule one. Orthodontic patients should continue seeing their regular dentist every six months (or as recommended) for professional cleanings.
Cleaning around braces is harder than cleaning natural teeth, which means professional help is even more valuable during treatment.
